I am reading Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights where he writes an essay everyday about something that sparks joy for him. When a flight attendant taps him to give serve his meal on a plane, he ponders on that encounter and the beauty of human connection. He observes his interaction with the barista making his coffee. He is delighted for his friend who recovers from a long illness. He calls himself the ambassador of gratitude.
Here’s my entry for Today’s Delight;
The way laughter purrrs out of the mouth from an empty stomach will always be a mystery to me. You shake the walls of your abdomen with thunderous quakings and it does not expel any of the leftover yam and egg sauce from last night. Rather, it purrrs a sonic cadence of chaotic sounds that can pass for a laugh. A sound that invites other humans into a canopy of vibrations that emnates joy.

Thanks to Black Mountain Institute for the opportunity to talk to ‘Pemi Aguda about her story collection Ghostroots. We had some good laughs.
